A few quick facts about the Costa Cálida and the province of Murcia:

  • Costa Cálida means 'warm coast' in Spanish and it's no wonder as this area enjoys 320 days of sunshine every year.
  • Murcia province is Spain's largest producer of lemons.
  • Fishing is the major industry in the area, followed by agriculture and mining.
  • The Mar Menor lagoon offers facilities for all kinds of watersports as well as nature and bird spotting.
  • Nearby Mazarron is one of the main tourist resorts on the Costa Cálida with many beaches and excellent tourist facilities. This tiny city is dominated by the remains of the 15th century Castillo de los Vélez and by a series of 16th and 17th century churches.
  • Further south, at Bolnuevo the huge sandy expanse holds one of nature´s most unusual surprises, the so called Enchanted City of Bolnuevo, a spot where water, wind and time have capriciously eroded the rocks to form fantastic figures. Towards Aguilas there are thirty miles of unspoilt beaches and the Cabo Cope-Calnegre natural park.

How to get there

Plane:

Three airports serve this corner of Spain; Alicante, Murcia and Almeria, and another is opening in a few years time at Corvera, the closest to Fuente Alamo. So with Spanish roads tending to be better, wider and emptier in the UK, it's easier to choose the nearest airport that you wish to travel from in the UK, and, possibly, leave a longer, more pleasant, drive from the Spanish airport.

Road:

Road links to northern Spain have been improved, with the A7 toll motorway running more or less right through to the ferry ports of northern Spain, or connecting to fast roads up to the Channel tunnel. Sail from Plymouth to Santander with Brittany Ferries -
